Vault 7
A new series of documents was released today by Wikileaks. The code name: Vault 7. It is currently the largest ever publication of confidential documents on the agency. The 8,761 documents are from the highly secure Center for Cyber Intelligence in Langley, Virginia.
The CIA recently lost its control over a majority of its hacking tools and documentation regarding those tools. Whoever gained access to this information now has the same hacking capability as the entire CIA. Much of the information has already circulated between contractors and former US hackers.
“"Year Zero" introduces the scope and direction of the CIA's global covert hacking program, its malware arsenal and dozens of "zero day" weaponized exploits against a wide range of U.S. and European company products, include Apple's iPhone, Google's Android and Microsoft's Windows and even Samsung TVs, which are turned into covert microphones.”
-Wikileaks
The source of the leak told Wikileaks that the details of these tools needs to be discussed in the public arena to determine whether or not the CIA's hacking capabilities go beyond what is mandated and whether or not there is an issue with the agency's public oversight.
The impacts of this release are not known as of yet, because of the massive amount of information that needs to be sifted through. As predictably as possible, the CIA released a statement regarding the release of this data.
“We do not comment on the authenticity or content of purported intelligence documents.”
