Milwaukee school board to make schools "Safe Haven" for immigrants

Members of the Milwaukee Public School board are attempting to make schools a "safe haven" for refugee and immigrant students.

As it sits right now, ICE agents could theoretically go into schools and detain undocumented students. Vice president of the Board Larry Miller was quoted saying:

"The day after the election, the presidential election, we had kids coming to class in tears,"

As WISN 12 reported:

Director Tatiana Joseph and Miller want immigrant and refugee students to know the district will also take care of and defend them.

"We're just creating the space, the protection around our space to ensure our children are worried about what we do and that's educating them," Joseph said.

The pair proposed a resolution that would make MPS schools "safe havens." A policy against openly providing information or legal status of students to government agencies.

Under this proposed "safe haven" policy MPS would refuse to give over information on students to Immigration agents and protect the students from being detained while in school.

This policy will go before the board this month and should be voted on by April 1st.

Do you agree with the proposed "safe haven" policy or no, and why?
