Kokomo, IN water contaminated with Vinyl Chloride and no one knows why.
Ground water in Kokomo, IN is contaminated with a substance called vinyl chloride. No one is exactly sure how this contaminate entered the water supply.
The EPA has yet to find out who the perpetrator is, so they are unable to deal with the problem. They were able to find the epicenter of the contamination, a 300 acre area northeast of Cutler Park in Kokomo. There are 14 companies that use the industrial solvent in the area.
This is not a new issue. This EPA investigation was conducted 9 years ago now, yet the water utility and state government feel as if they do not have to inform residents.
As Private lab results reported, vinyl chloride is a known cancer causing agent in humans. It’s most commonly linked to liver cancer, but has also been linked to brain cancer, reproductive disorders, brain cancers, scleroderma, allergies, and developmental disorders in children.
By the EPA's own estimates, cleaning up this large scale contamination will take 8 years. No one has been able to find the source of the contamination yet, so cleaning up is impossible.
The residents of Kokomo were never informed of this major issue. Not by Indiana American Water, the State of Indiana or the EPA. We know this chemical is just as if not more dangerous than lead, yet it is being ignored.
If you, or anyone you know, lives in Kokomo please urge them to get their water tested as well as themselves.
Stay tuned for more news on this environmental catastrophe.
